Kayaking in the Norwegian fjords

Join us for an unforgettable kayaking adventure and discover the Nærøyfjord, the deepest and most famous fjord in Norway. As you glide over crystal-clear waters, the steep cliffs tower high above you, and you'll feel the grandeur of nature all around.

Along the way, you'll paddle past towering cliffs and charming villages, experiencing the rich history of this region, where the Vikings once left their mark.

When booking, you can choose both a kayak (single or double) and a route. With an interactive app and a briefing from the guide, where you'll learn everything about kayaking, you'll start your adventure fully prepared.

The Kayak Routes

Choose our standard trip, the Nærøyroute, or go for an extended adventure with the Aurlandsroute. Both routes give you the chance to explore the fjords from the water and from above. All hikes are optional, so on-site you decide how challenging you want your trip to be.

On the Nærøyroute, you paddle around 65 km, with Undredal as the furthest point. You can also add up to 60 km of hikes. This route is perfect for anyone looking to experience the adventure of Norway’s nature.

For those who want to push their limits, the Aurlandsroute continues all the way to the famous Flåm. In total, you paddle about 100 km and can add up to 60 km of hikes. Ideal for anyone seeking a longer and more intense experience.

*Note: these routes may change due to weather conditions.

Choose your route through the fjords

You can let us know which route you want to take while booking, but you can also change it later (even on-site). So don’t worry if you’re not sure right now.

Below you'll find a sample of a well-balanced week program for both routes. You'll discover the most beautiful highlights, while the route offers plenty of variety between kayaking and hiking.

WHY CHOOSE THE KAYAK TRIP?

No minibar, but a million-star hotel.

Sleep in the heart of nature, with the gentle lapping of the fjord as your background music. On The Kayak Trip, your tent is your hotel room and the starry sky is your view.

CAMPING IN NORWAY

During The Kayak Trip, you'll be camping in a tent: on the first and last night, you'll stay at the base camp, where you have access to facilities. The other nights, you'll spend in the heart of the fjords surrounded by beautiful nature.

In Norway, the right to roam allows for wild camping as a basic right. However, it can sometimes be a challenge to find nice and accessible sleeping spots in the steep valleys of the fjords. That's why our guide will point out a campspot in nature for you every day, where you can fully relax and enjoy breathtaking views.

Frequently Asked Questions

Accommodation & sanitation

During this trip, you'll sleep seven nights in a tent that you either bring along or rent from us. On the first and last night of the trip, you'll stay at the Kayak Trip basecamp in Fresvik, where you'll have access to sanitary facilities. For all the other nights, you'll be sleeping in the most beautiful spots of the Nærøyfjord.

On the water, "in the middle of nature", there are no showers or toilets. However, in the middle of the week, you'll stay at a campsite that does have sanitary facilities. You'll find plenty of opportunities along the way to make necessary pit stops and refill your water bottle.

Food & drinks

At The Kayak Trip, you can order an Adventure Foodpack. This is highly recommended for both vegetarians (€107) and meat eaters (€111) and consists of compact meals.

Those who order the foodpack will receive 1 fresh meal at the basecamp at the beginning of the trip, 18 freeze-dried meals, and 3 desserts to prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the great outdoors. You'll also get a handy cooking set (including a pot, gas burner, gas canister, and utensils).

The foodpack provides all your meals; you just need to bring a lighter and some tasty and nutritious snacks for munching while paddling or hiking.

The salty fjord water is, of course, not drinkable, but along the way, you'll pass countless waterfalls where you can fill your bottle with delicious, fresh drinking water. A water filter or Hadex is not necessary, but you can always bring one if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Camping gear

You can rent all your camping gear (sturdy tent, insulating mat, & warm sleeping bag) from us for €79 per person. This way, you can be sure of having good equipment that fits in the kayak's dry compartment, and you won’t have to take it with you on the plane.

Of course, you can also bring your own camping gear. Just make sure your tent is sturdy, lightweight, and compact, and that it is weather-resistant. Your mat and sleeping bag should also be suitable for the wet and sometimes cold nights in the fjords.

Guides

A team of experienced kayak guides is always on hand for you. They know all the routes and have chosen the most beautiful hikes and cozy spots for you and your fellow travelers. Plus, they'll guide you effortlessly and safely through the sometimes high waves and challenging weather conditions in the fjords.

Thanks to the SOS button in our own Kayak Trip app, help can be quickly summoned in case of an emergency.

Baggage on the plane

When you book a flight with us, it includes one piece of hand luggage (max. 55 x 35 x 25 cm) and one accessory (e.g., a handbag or laptop, max. 40 x 30 x 15 cm) with a total max. weight of 12kg.

For €55, you can add one piece of checked baggage (max. 23kg and max. 158cm L+B+H) for both your outbound and return flight. However, we recommend keeping it under 15 kg, as space in the kayak is limited.

Do you have any other questions about the flights? Check out the Travelbase Flights Help Center.

Who is this trip for?

This trip is perfect for sporty couples, friend groups, and solo travelers. Families are also welcome, but we advise against this trip for children under 16 years old. There is no discount for minors.

Are you an adventurous solo traveler? At The Kayak Trip, we warmly welcome solo explorers! We get excited individual travelers every week who are eager to make new friends. Want to get to know each other a bit before you leave? Check out The Kayak Trip Facebook group or feel free to post a message yourself.

How fit do I need to be?

The Kayak Trip is an active challenge: You'll paddle over the water for 6 days while also going on various hikes. That's why this trip is perfect for adventurers with a good fitness level and a love for the outdoors, no matter the weather.

No kayaking experience is needed: your guide will provide you with full instructions and a safety briefing. However, for safety reasons, it's required that you have at least a swimming diploma A.

You can choose how many hikes you do and how many kilometers you cover. The steep walls of the fjords make some hikes quite challenging if you're not used to hiking regularly. We recommend doing a bit of training before your trip to get the most out of this Kayak Trip in Norway.

Are you looking for a more relaxed paddling adventure in a less rugged landscape? Then The Canoe Trip might be just your thing!

Which route should I choose?

You can choose from two different routes.

Our standard route, the Nærøy route, is perfect for anyone looking to experience adventure in the Norwegian nature. Besides kayaking, there’s plenty of time to relax and enjoy the fjords, as well as to dive into the beautiful hikes you can take along the way.

Are you looking for more of a challenge? Do you want to push your limits and go that extra step? Then the longer Aurlands route is just for you. You’ll paddle about 35 extra kilometers and discover a new part of the fjord. The journey takes you all the way to Flåm, a charming village with a breathtaking viewpoint over the Aurlandsfjord.

Do I need to choose a route while booking?

For your Kayak Trip, you can choose between 2 routes: “Nærøy route” & “Aurlands route.” You can indicate your preference while booking, but it's not mandatory.

Is this a group trip?

At the beginning of the trip, the group is divided into smaller teams, each with its own guide. This way, you always get the right guidance and can safely enjoy your adventure. When the weather and conditions allow, there’s room to kayak a bit on your own. In case of thunderstorms, storms, or high waves, the guide will decide that everyone stays together, ensuring safety at all times.

Since all hikes are listed in our handy Travelbase app, you can head out on your own every day. This way, you can choose how to explore the fjords on foot: alone, with your travel companions, or together with new friends.

What if I can no longer go on my booked trip?

Do you want to be fully covered until the moment of departure? Then choose our regular cancellation insurance (€ 59) when booking.

You can find all the terms of our cancellation insurance here.

Did you book early and receive our Superflex booking conditions for free? Then you can change or cancel your booking for free until April 1, 2026 without having to give a reason.

What should I bring?

Only pack what you really need. Go for compact, high-quality, and waterproof gear. You can use our handy packing list to check things off. This way, you can be sure that everything fits and that you're not making the journey harder than it needs to be.

Additionally, the storage space in the kayak is divided into several smaller compartments. So, choose smaller duffel bags and dry bags of max. 30 liters instead of a large trekking backpack.

Are you still bringing a large backpack or suitcase on the plane? No problem! You can safely leave it at the base camp.

What if I encounter mountain trolls?

Trolls are giant creatures from Scandinavian folklore. They can't stand the sound of church bells, which is why they live far from civilization in the high mountains and deep forests.

Since you'll be camping in nature during The Kayak Trip, you might hear their echoes resonating through the fjords just after sunset. Trolls turn to stone in sunlight, so they only come out at night. Because they are so common in Norse mythology, it's best to stay on guard...
